From Boss Girl to Moss Girl to the Balance in Between.
THE WORK – Hustle culture is not the answer, but escaping to the woods isn't either. Where do we go instead?
With THE WORK I am sharing transmissions around mystical business, branding and co-creating a new paradigm on Earth. Today it’s all about my path from boss to moss girl, and the golden thread that hides in between the two.
I guess you have probably been hanging around on socials for a while, and, just like me, have come across the whole Boss Babe culture, that – I think – is now past its peak. And maybe you were also one of those who felt somewhat intrigued, and at the same time repulsed by the whole concept and by the lifestyle that was and is being promoted around it.
I sure had my touch points with it all.
There was something that pulled me towards the idea of being a female entrepreneur that “kicks ass”, has the confidence of a lioness, and goes out into the world knowing exactly what she wants and how to get it.
The aspiration to be one of those women first landed for me when I was still at uni. At the time, I was in the middle of taking over my parents’ business, while being hooked on building my own as well (oh, and studying full-time – I was wildly oblivious to the fact that days only have 24 hours and I only have one body, but that’s a different story). I felt the buzz of walking around London, taking big, fast steps towards becoming a “proper” entrepreneur. I became Head of Marketing at the Enterprise Society at uni, presented ideas to a bunch of renowned business folks in Cambridge, and wanted to feel proud of myself. I wanted to be admired, and I wanted to become untouchable.
Just that none of that was truly me.
I was hovering. There were no roots to these endeavours, no grounding – just a young woman floating in the cloudy ideals that other people had of what it means to be successful, especially as a “modern woman” (will say: let’s show them that “despite” being a woman, I can become one of “them”). I was a young woman who had lost the true spirit of who she is, and her real motivation for being alive, which was certainly not to be found in the boss babe mask that I so desperately tried to put on.
After moving to Berlin, ping-ponging from idea to idea, venture to venture, experiment to experiment (from ideating a sustainable design agency to producing vegan bread spreads, or starting a company that redistributes living spaces in accordance with distance to the workplace) – the pandemic hit.
And with it came a 180-degree turn in my dreams and desires.
The city made me feel trapped, and so did the world of business. I had faced mentors who told me I should “f*** off” the market, because I hadn’t managed to get to 5-figure months within 12 weeks of starting. I was beyond fed up, constantly anxious, and dipping my toes in and out of depressive episodes and insane stress-levels (not to mention the undiagnosed autism – but that, again, is a different story).
The next idea arrived: I wanted out.
Signing up for a course in forest bathing was a very mildly spiced alternative for what I really longed for: to buy a small cottage in Sweden, move to the woods, become self-sufficient and leave this loud and noisy world of stress, hustle and rush behind. Ditch the Boss Girl, embrace the Moss Girl.
But there was a problem:
I had a deep desire to have a positive impact in the world.
With this desire came the realisation that just dropping everything, leaving society for good, and escaping into the woods was not going to do the trick…
I fully believe that the way we as humans are designed to live on this planet is vastly different from what we experience right now. Spending most of our time in front of a screen is certainly not the ideal way of existing for anyone, and the disconnection from nature is rupturing our lives and relationships to other beings, our environment and life itself to a point that can feel terrifyingly hopeless. And yet – in times of transition, as we are experiencing now, to escape the game completely simply cannot be the answer, as much as I still hold the dream of the lonely cottage in the middle of nowhere close to my heart.
We are not here to escape the system. We are here to help change it.
I believe that those of us who feel called to paradigm-shifting, visionary thinking, and the co-creation of a better future aren’t meant to run away from what fails us to start something completely new in our own little bubbles.
I believe that we are meant to bring our magic into the very systems that are broken and that keep us trapped – which is a much tougher task than dropping it all and legging it. It’s easier to see the world in black and white, mark what is as bad, and refuse to interact with it. Looking at it all from a place of openness for nuance, gently shaping, moving and forming the new from the inside out, taking what is in our hands and lovingly co-creating something new and beautiful from it – that’s hard work.
There are no easy answers, because the paradigm that allows us to live in the Moss AND change the world is not yet here. But we’re part of building it. We are, in fact, the bridge-keepers, the ones who connect the worlds.
We are stepping into change from the earthy consciousness of the moss girl, and bringing her energy into the boss world, transforming what it means to be a leader, changing how business is done and how the economy functions.
Will say:
You don’t have to ditch the moss dream to be a boss.
Just like you don’t have to leave all boss energy behind to live from the consciousness of the moss wisdom.
What if you can bring those two worlds together, allow them to touch and to shape something new and beautiful?
What if the old and the new don’t need to fight each other, but rather merge with grace, lovingly shapeshifting and transforming, so that the transition itself becomes an organically flowing river of life?
And what if you don’t have to have the answers yet on how exactly to achieve all this, but living the question is more than enough?
